ABOUT THE ROLE…
As our Tax Accountant specializing in indirect taxes, you’ll be the go-to expert for excise tax, sales & use tax, and gross receipts tax across multiple jurisdictions. Your work will directly protect the company from financial and reputational risk, ensure compliance in a fast-changing regulatory environment, and provide leadership during audits.
You will be the person who ensures that our tax filings are accurate, timely, and defensible, while also serving as a trusted resource for internal teams who need guidance on tax implications for new products, services, or operational changes. You’ll also shape how we communicate tax updates internally, empowering teams to make informed decisions and avoid costly missteps.
WHAT WILL YOU BE RESPONSIBLE FOR?
- Oversee multi-state tax compliance for multiple business lines, including preparation, review, and filing of returns, ensuring all deadlines are met and filings are accurate.
- Research and resolve any compliance discrepancies between outside vendor prepared returns and actual internal sales data.
- Participate in all user end and regression testing related to tax for new products, new websites or program launches, and new retail stores.
- Be point of contact for outside tax vendors utilized to prepare returns and compliance forms. (Currently Avalara and IGEN)
- Lead and manage all state-level audits for excise, sales & use, and gross receipts taxes—serving as the primary point of contact with auditors and regulatory agencies, preparing documentation, and representing the company’s position with professionalism and accuracy.
- Manage tobacco, business, and sales tax licensing requirements across all applicable jurisdictions, including obtaining, renewing, and maintaining compliance with state and local licenses.
- Complete timely and accurate account reconciliations for all indirect tax accounts, identifying discrepancies, investigating root causes, and implementing corrective actions.
- Prepare and distribute a quarterly Tax Bulletin summarizing legislative changes, compliance updates, and best practices for internal stakeholders, ensuring that operational teams are aware of and prepared for upcoming changes.
- Develop and document business processes to maintain and strengthen internal controls.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams—including operations, finance, and legal—to ensure tax implications are considered in business decisions, contracts, and new initiatives.
- Support special projects such as system implementations, process redesigns, and tax planning initiatives that align with company growth strategies.
- Assist with year-end audit, including compiling requested information and preparation of various analysis.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, MBA is a plus.
- 3–5+ years of experience in indirect tax compliance, preferably with multi-state exposure and multiple business lines.
- Familiarity with accounting principles, GAAP, IFRS, FASB
- Experience AX Dynamics or SAP a plus
- Advanced Excel skills; experience with tax compliance software such as Avalara and IGEN.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Exceptional attention to detail, with the ability to translate complex tax concepts into clear, actionable guidance for non-tax professionals.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Strong knowledge of excise tax, sales & use tax, and gross receipts tax regulations, with the ability to interpret and apply them to complex business scenarios.
- Proven experience leading audits from start to finish, including preparation, negotiation, and resolution.
- Advanced Excel skills; experience with tax compliance software such as Avalara, IGEN, Vertex, or ONESOURCE is highly desirable.
- Exceptional attention to detail, with the ability to translate complex tax concepts into clear, actionable guidance for non-tax professionals.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a collaborative mindset and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
